The 5 Greatest Goalies in Florida Panthers History

Miami’s Florida Panthers have been one of the most consistent teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) in recent years. They won their first Stanley Cup in 2023-24, reached the Stanley Cup Final the year prior, and have made the playoffs in five consecutive seasons. Florida made the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in only its third season (1995-96) but had some lean years in between appearances, making the playoffs just four times in 22 seasons.

While Florida has had several All-Star forwards and defensemen, including Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Jay Bouwmeester, goaltending has been a big reason for their success. Thirty-nine goalies have appeared in at least one game for the Panthers since their inaugural season—and here are five of the best.

Roberto Luongo

Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022, Roberto Luongo ranks fourth all-time in career victories (489) and ninth in shutouts (77). He began his 19-year career with the New York Islanders, selected fourth overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, but was traded to the Panthers, along with Olli Jokinen, in June 2000 for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha. Luongo had solid numbers early in his career with the Panthers, finishing top-10 in Vezina Trophy voting in 2003-04 and 2005-06, but the team in front of him was never good enough to make the playoffs.

Florida traded Luongo and Lukáš Krajíček to the Vancouver Canucks for Todd Bertuzzi, Alex Auld, and Bryan Allen in 2006. Luongo played eight seasons in Vancouver and led the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2010-11. The Canucks traded him back to the Panthers in 2014 and he played six more seasons in Florida before retiring following the 2018-19 season.

Luongo holds almost every Panthers goaltending record. He is the franchise's all-time leader in wins (230), saves (16,086) and shutouts (38). Also a member of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, he has been working in the Panthers' front office since 2019 and currently oversees its Goaltending Excellence Department.

Sergei Bobrovsky

While he doesn't hold as many Panthers records as Luongo, Sergei Bobrovsky was an integral member of the Florida team that won the Stanley Cup in 2024. A two-time Vezina Trophy winner, he was runner-up for the award last season and was 16-8 with a 2.32 goals-against average (GAA) and .906 save percentage in the playoffs. He was the first member of the Panthers to lift the Stanley Cup after Barkov, the team's captain, and was the first goalie in league history to hoist the trophy immediately after the captain.

"He deserved it," Barkov said of the Panthers goaltender, speaking to NHL.com. "I think he's been in the League for a long time (14 seasons). I think he deserves it ... He's been unbelievable for us every single night this whole year. He's a big reason why we won."

Bobrovsky signed a seven-year contract with the Panthers in the 2019 offseason and is now in his sixth season with the team. He had 141 regular season wins before the 2024-25 season and led all goaltenders with 39 wins in the 2021-22 season.

Tomáš Vokoun

A 48-year-old native of Czechia, Tomáš Vokoun played four seasons with the Panthers from 2007-08 to 2010-11. He was an All-Star in his first season with the team, posting a 30-29-8 record with a 2.68 GAA and .919 save percentage. He had a save percentage above .920 in each of the next four seasons. Vokoun was 101-108-30 with a 2.57 GAA and .923 save percentage through 248 regular season games with the Panthers.

Selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the ninth round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Vokoun played one game for the Canadiens in 1996-97 and later spent eight seasons with the Nashville Predators before being traded to the Panthers. He played one season each with the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins before retiring in 2014.

Vokoun is a youth goalie coach with the Florida Kings Hockey Club.

John Vanbiesbrouck

A 20-year NHL veteran, John Vanbiesbrouck spent five seasons with the Panthers from 1993-94 to 1997-98. Selected by the Panthers from the Vancouver Canucks in the 1993 expansion draft, Vanbiesbrouck was an All-Star in three of his five seasons in Florida and had his best year in 1996-97, posting a 27-19-10 record and a 2.29 GAA and .919 save percentage in 57 games.

He led the Panthers to the Stanley Cup Final in the previous season, producing a 12-10 record, 2.25 GAA, and .932 save percentage in 22 playoff games. Vanbiesbrouck signed with the Philadelphia Flyers following the 1997-98 season.

James Reimer

A former fourth-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, James Reimer is a 15-year NHL veteran who has played for seven different teams. He spent six years with the Maple Leafs and joined the Panthers via free agency in the 2016 offseason. Reimer had a winning record in each of his three seasons in Florida and concluded his tenure with the team with a 53-42-16 record, 2.85 GAA, and .912 save percentage.

Florida traded Reimer to the Carolina Hurricanes for Scott Darling and a sixth-round draft pick in the 2019 offseason.
