Miami Heat Role Players of 2013: Where Are They Now?
The Miami Heat stands out as one of the most consistent teams in the NBA since the turn of the century, securing playoff spots in 18 of 24 seasons and battling in seven NBA Finals. The team nabbed its first-ever title in the 2005-06 season, then won back-to-back titles in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.
While a lot of credit goes to the "Big 3"—LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh—for steering the Heat to consecutive titles, loads of other key players threw in some pivotal moves, too.
Shane Battier, along with Mario Chalmers, Mike Miller, and Chris Andersen grabbed the spotlight with their stellar performance in the 2013 NBA Finals during a jaw-dropping seven-game triumph against the San Antonio Spurs. Let's take a peek at what these key role players have done since those days and what's keeping them busy now.
Shane Battier
Shane Battier, known for his solid defense and slick three-pointers, pitched in with an average of 5.6 points and 1.6 boards in just 12.4 minutes from the bench during the Heat's series run in 2013. At the age of 34, Battier was on the brink of hanging up his sneakers, but he still managed to make a mark on the game from both sides of the court. In the regular season leading up to his retirement, he landed in the 12th spot for the Sixth Man of the Year award racking up a cool six points couple of rebounds, and an assist each game. After the 2013-14 season wrapped up, he called it quits on his pro basketball career.
An ace with two All-Defensive team awards to his name, Shane Battier stepped up to be the vice president of basketball development and analytics for the Miami Heat front office following his days on the court. He left his full-time position in 2021, yet still stays connected to the squad, giving advice as a "strategic consultant" for Heat CEO Nick Arison. Battier's also got a gig chatting sports on a podcast with former NFL star Alex Smith, throws his support behind a group investing funds into the East Asia Super League, runs a charity, and speaks at corporate gigs over a dozen times each year.
"I'm so fascinated about learning. I turned 46 this week and I feel I have so much to learn and have so much to do in the world still," Battier told the Miami Herald in September 2024. "I needed to go out and explore and meet and learn. I wanted to learn new industries. It sounds very strange because I love basketball. For me to be truly happy, that’s what I need to do."
Mario Chalmers
Mario Chalmers, a towering 6-foot-2 point guard from Anchorage, Alaska, thrilled in Miami for a solid eight seasons running from 2008-09 all the way to 2015-16, snagging two NBA championships.
He played backup to Mike Bibby in the first five games of the 2011 NBA Finals, which the Heat lost, but started in both of the 2013 NBA Finals. Tallying up his performance in the 2013 NBA Finals, he notched an average of 10.6 buckets, scooped up 2.7 boards, and dished out 2.1 assists.
Coincidentally, Chalmers came out on top over Bibby in a star-studded poker game back in November 2024. The match also featured ex-NFL MVP Adrian Peterson and the well-known Twitch streamer Ninja. Chalmers' success isn't just luck; he's tasted victory at all stages of his career. He sits among 17 NBA legends to snag a high school state championship, an NCAA title, and an NBA championship. As of 2024, he was still playing for 3's Company in the BIG3 league.
Mike Miller
A sharpshooting guard who played 17 seasons in the NBA and won consecutive titles with the Heat, Miller is now a player agent, most notably advising Memphis Grizzlies' All-Star point guard Ja Morant. He began representing Morant via Lift Sports Management in April 2024.
Despite his success in Miami, the Heat waived Miller after the 2013 NBA Finals. He subsequently signed with the Grizzlies and played four more seasons with Memphis, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Denver Nuggets before retiring. He played alongside future three-time MVP Nikola Jokic during his rookie season in Denver and was among the first to recognize his greatness, noting "the whole game just freezes" when the ball was in Jokic's hands.
Miller also owned an upscale sports bar and casino for about three years in his home state of South Dakota. He coached his son, Mavrick, to a state high school championship at Houston High School in 2023. Mavrick committed to Tennessee Prep Academy for the 2024-25 season.
Chris Andersen
Miami added Chris Andersen to their roster in January 2013. This experienced player stayed for four seasons. He averaged 5.6 points, snagging 4.7 rebounds and blocking 1.1 shots each game. In the 2013 NBA Finals, he was on fire, nailing 8 out of his 11 shots. After 15 seasons in the NBA, he retired as a player for the Cleveland Cavaliers after the 2016-17 season.
Andersen hopped into the BIG3 scene once he hung up his NBA jersey. He snagged a league title in 2018. Andersen's not only famed for his basketball skills. He is a colorful figure known for the tattoos that cover his body. Not too long ago, he appeared in a PETA "Ink, Not Mink" anti-fur campaign.
